Three categories of attribution tooling
1. Platform-native attribution
Built into the analytics or ad platform you already run - GA4's data-driven attribution, Adobe Analytics' attribution IQ, Amplitude's cross-channel reporting. Free or included in your existing license; limited to what that platform can see.
2. Dedicated marketing attribution software
Purpose-built vendors that unify conversion data across ad platforms, analytics, and CRM, then apply attribution models independent of any single source platform. This is what most people mean by "marketing attribution software" as distinct from a general analytics tool.
3. Warehouse-native / build-it-yourself
Attribution logic built on top of your own data warehouse, typically by an internal data/engineering team. Full control, no vendor cost, but the identity resolution and modeling work has to be built and maintained internally.
How to evaluate, by job to be done
| If your job is... | Look at |
|---|---|
| Reconciling ad platform vs analytics vs CRM numbers | Dedicated attribution software with native integrations to all three |
| Understanding one platform's own channel mix | That platform's native attribution first |
| Crediting offline/phone/in-store conversions | Tools with explicit offline conversion import, or CRM-side attribution |
| Full control and no per-seat vendor cost | Warehouse-native, if you already have the data engineering capacity |
Why this page does not rank vendors
We do not run a paid-placement list, and we do not resell attribution software - so we describe categories and jobs to be done rather than publishing star ratings we cannot back with our own controlled testing. If you want a recommendation for your specific stack, that is a scoped conversation, not a listicle.
Multi-touch attribution tools specifically
Tools marketed specifically for multi-touch attribution sit inside the "dedicated marketing attribution software" category above - the differentiator to check is whether the tool's identity resolution matches your actual customer journey (cross-device, offline, long sales cycle) rather than just its list of supported models. See our multi-touch attribution guide for what to check before buying.
